Richard
Rayner - Finalist - Write up
Richard introduced his solo by playing with hands before
breaking out into polyrhythmic haven. He has great feel and
interspersed a laid-back shuffle with crisp snare rolls. Moving
through jazz and swing, latin and rock grooves, Richard’s solo
was a textbook example of as many rhythms as you could possibly
cram into two minutes
The first ensemble piece was delivered confidently
with – again – a wide range of beats being delivered. There was an
excellent feeling to this piece – Richard was grooving his way
through the changes and the audience lapped it up. Groove was the
watchword for the shuffle as Richard launched into a display of
backbeats fills. Unfazed by the complexity of the piece, confidence
shone through and Richard delivered one of the best interpretations
of the day. He played well beyond his years.
